Tutor (Part-time)

Location: Itasca

The tutor will provide individual or in some cases small group instruction to students in an after-school tutoring program at Presbyterian Children’s Home’s and Services campuses.   Schedule for tutoring the children is Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Essential Job Functions:

    1. The tutor will assist with homework, study skills strategies, and/ or remedial instruction and keep these the primary activities of tutoring. Emphasis on the tutoring will be mathematics and science, followed by history and English.
    2. The tutor will meet regularly (Tuesday and Thursday evening) and keep a specific time commitment with the learner.
    3. The tutor will make use of materials provided and contact their supervisor for any additional materials needed.
    4. The tutor will help plan the course of study with their supervisor or designee.
    5. The tutor will communicate regularly with the supervisor or designee regarding the student’s progress.
    6. The instruction provided by the tutor will be student centered and participatory.
    7. The tutor will complete any requested paper work promptly.
    8. The tutor will have high expectations and standards for the learner.
    9. The tutor will provide frequent praise and positive reinforcement to show appreciation for the learners’ efforts and achievement.
    10. The tutor will attend training sessions or workshops provided by the Director of Student Education when requested.
    11. The tutor will respect the PCHAS expectations regarding confidentiality.
    12. The tutor assumes the role of tutor/facilitator rather than counselor.
    13. If the student requests help beyond the tutor’s training or skills, the tutor will consult the supervisor or designee.

Working Conditions:

Works in a learning center setting and/or within a residence for children in placement with close contact with children. Uses office equipment including computers.  May sit for extended periods of time.  Work schedule may include time in the evenings.

Education and Experience:

Two years of post-secondary education. Experience working with children.  Prefer Certification in teaching field.

Knowledge and Skills:

Must be computer literate and familiar with spreadsheet and word processing software. Must also be able to use general office equipment such as telephone, copy machine, fax, and calculator. Must have strong interpersonal skills to work with staff throughout agency. Knowledge of reading, writing skills, mathematics, and science. Ability to share knowledge with children and show patience.
