Forty-four-year-old Eastminster Book Review: Oldest PCHAS Fundraiser

Forty-four years ago, Dallas Presbyterian Estelle Amos wanted a way to help support the work of Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services. She wanted to create a fun event that would be enjoyable to attend and would also provide an opportunity to help children in need, as she said, “in a big way.” She partnered with her friend Rose-Mary Rumbly to create the Eastminster Book Review.

The fundraiser is the longest running annual fundraiser in PCHAS’ history. As the years have passed the leadership of the fundraiser and pastor of the church have changed hands from Estelle Amos to Sivila Howard, Doris Laporte and now Denise Bennet and Rev. Sherry Holloman.

For Rose-Mary, thinking about that first event stirred up a lot of memories, including this one: “I remember that first gathering so well. Estelle invited the director of PCHAS’ Itasca Children’s Home campus to speak. What a dedicated gentleman! He spoke about his devotion to the kids and how much he appreciated our efforts to help. I became a good friend of the director and looked forward to seeing and hearing him each year.”

Rose-Mary continued, “One year, he brought an assistant. This lovely girl had lived in one of the homes, graduated from high school, and then graduated from Dallas Baptist University. I had been her teacher. I was so proud! I am also proud to speak at these yearly gatherings. It’s my honor to be a part of this great fundraiser for these precious children.”

If you missed out on the Book Review this year make sure to mark your calendars. Next year it will be held on August 15, 2017 at 10am. Contact Eastminster Presbyterian Church for more information at 214-381-4693.
