Ruth’s Story

We first met Ruth when she was at her wit’s end. Having raised her two boys into adulthood, she thought changing diapers, mixing formula and packing school luncheons were things of the past.  Then one day she learned that her eldest son and his wife could no longer care for their three children.

At sixty-five she found herself at a loss for how to properly care for a six-month-old, a four-year-old and a ten-year-old.  But the children, Sophie, Erin and Robert, needed her help right away.  Ruth knew she needed to care for these children even if it meant losing her job.  Ruth reached out to PCHAS through a friend and starting working with one of our Child and Family Specialists.

Over the next three months, together they developed a plan. Now the family has stabilized and they have adjusted to their new life together.  Ruth’s church has also been a huge help and has donated several things the children needed right away.

What is the Child and Family Program?

The Child and Family Program helps stabilize families during a crisis. Our Specialists maximize available PCHAS and community resources to meet the specific needs of each family. We aim to prevent future generations from falling into vicious cycles of crisis, such as poverty and homelessness. A Specialist visits families in their homes to assess their needs, identify existing strengths, and develop plans for improved stability and well-being.

The families we serve have children at home ages 0-17 years.  Many of these families have histories of poverty, abuse, neglect, and homelessness. We provide this unique family preservation program at multiple locations throughout Texas and Louisiana.
