Staff Profile: Sara Newell, Senior Development Officer

We asked Sara Newell, our new Senior Development Officer, to introduce herself and here’s her lively response:

“Hello! I am the new Senior Development Officer for the Dallas and East Texas Region, the region formerly served by Steve Hurst, who has retired.  I have the privilege of serving Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services (PCHAS) and hope to continue the great work he began in the Dallas and East Texas area.

PCHAS holds a special place in my heart.  I began working as a “direct care” social worker with children at PCHAS of Missouri’s Regional Girl’s Shelter (now Ashley House).  I felt a very strong connection to the mission of the organization, and I wanted to make an impact on children who had been abused or neglected.

After this experience at PCHAS of Missouri, I longed to do more in the social work arena, and moved to Dallas to finish my Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology at Dallas Baptist University. I sought employment with PCHAS here in Texas to use my previous marketing skills and find a way to serve children on a broad scale.

I am eager to begin to get to know each of you and to keep you updated on how your generous gifts are impacting children in Texas and Louisiana. To give you an opportunity to get to know me a little better, I will share a few fun facts about me. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on Pearl Harbor Day to my surfing pastor father and mother who taught special needs children.

I grew up with two sisters, and now also have a brother-in-law, two nieces and a nephew. If you are around me for any prolonged period of time, I am sure I will thrill you with their beautiful pictures and brag about them. As far as hobbies are concerned, I enjoy reading and collecting tea cups to add to the collection my grandmother started. I know that collecting tea cups is a rather unusual hobby. I guess you can say that I have somewhat of an “old soul.”

I look forward to meeting you and partnering with you to serve the children of PCHAS. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at or by phone 417-576-0124.
